A Sensory Guide to a Mindful Holiday Season

December 1, 2025

Magical, joyful, and heartwarming are words most often used to describe the holiday season. Yet for many, December also brings increased demands, emotional complexity, disrupted routines, and an accumulation of stressors that strain the nervous system. Our bodies quickly enter survival mode which not only impacts our capacity to be present in each moment, but also affects our digestion, sleep quality, immunity, hormones, and cognitive function.
How do we ensure we are nourished in every way rather than depleted? Consider approaching this season differently by experiencing it wholly through each of your five senses.

Why Our Senses Matter

Your sensory system is one of the most direct ways to regulate your physiology. Each of our five senses communicates with brain regions involved in emotion, stress modulation, and autonomic balance, offering an accessible pathway to calm in the midst of holiday intensity. When used intentionally, sensory input can:
  • Reduce sympathetic (fight-or-flight) activation
  • Enhance parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) tone
  • Improve heart rate variability (HRV)
  • Support digestion and metabolic stability
  • Modulate cortisol rhythms
  • Promote emotional regulation and cognitive clarity

Savoring the Season Through the Five Senses:

Sight:
Visual stimuli profoundly influence the nervous system. Soft, warm light lowers sympathetic arousal, while overly bright environments increase cortisol and perceptual stress.
What to do:
  • Get natural morning light exposure
  • Opt for warm lamps, candles, or the soft glow of holiday lights
  • Take a “visual pause” for 30 seconds to look at something you find beautiful, such as falling snow, sunlight reflected on a frosty window, or birds on the feeder
Smell:
Olfactory pathways have a direct neural connection to the limbic system, making scent one of the fastest ways to affect emotional tone and stress physiology.
What to do:
  • Diffuse a grounding essential oil, such as lavender, frankincense, cedarwood, or bergamot
  • Create a simmer pot with orange peel, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise
  • Pause to enjoy the scent of the winter air
Sound:
Sounds influences vagal tone through pathways connecting the inner ear, vocal cords, and brainstem. Overstimulating noise contributes to agitation and fatigue, while calming sounds can increase HRV and reduce sympathetic dominance.
What to do:
  • Create a playlist of gentle music, nature sounds, or instrumental holiday pieces
  • If a gathering feels overstimulating, step away for 1-2 minutes of quiet to recalibrate
  • Try humming, chanting, or singing to gently activate the vagus nerve
Taste:
Holidays foods often come with guilt or eating can be rushed, while eating mindfully activates the cephalic phase of digestion, which primes the stomach, pancreas, and gut.
What to do:
  • Eat slowly and notice the flavors, textures, and experience of nourishing your body
  • Choose seasonal foods that bring joy and avoid guilt-based thinking that triggers stress chemistry
  • When possible, create a calm eating environment, such as reduced noise and warm light
Touch:
Touch is a potent regulator of the autonomic nervous system. Warmth, pressure, and gentle movement increase oxytocin, reduce cortisol, relax musculature, and deepen parasympathetic activation.
What to do:
  • Enjoy cozy blankets, warm beverages, heated packs, or winter layers
  • Engage in gentle stretching, restorative yoga, or a walk
  • Notice points of contact, such as your feet on the floor or back against a chair, when you feel overwhelmed
As you move through the holiday season, allow your senses to invite you back to presence, steadiness, and to the quiet wisdom of your own body. In doing so, you cultivate a season shaped not by pressure or obligation, but by mindful moments, pockets of stillness, and a deeper sense of calm.
