Clearing the Slate

April 1, 2026

In March, we talked about the importance of regulation and ways we can support internal conditions in our body to prepare for spring. The Spring Equinox on March 20thinitiated a cascade of biological changes that continue building through April: increasing light exposure suppresses melatonin and begins the shift of the body’s circadian rhythm, serotonin production increases, and the immune system transitions from a winter, conservation state to a more active state. And, critically for detoxification, digestive enzyme activity increases, bile production from the liver improves, and kidney filtration becomes more robust.
Each of these signal that our body is already initiating its own spring clearing by upregulating the systems responsible for clearing metabolic waste, processing hormones, filtering environmental toxins, and renewing cellular tissue. True detoxification is the work of specific organs that are running continuously. Supporting them this month begins with understanding what each does and what it needs.

The Organs of Elimination: Your Body's Clearing System

The Liver – The liver is the body’s primary detoxification organ and processes everything that enters the bloodstream through a sophisticated two-phase system. In Phase I, it converts fat-soluble toxins into intermediate compounds using enzymes in the cytochrome P450 family. In Phase II, it conjugates these intermediates (binds them to molecules that make them water-soluble) so they can be excreted via bile and urine. Both phases require specific nutrients to function, such as B vitamins, magnesium, glycine, glutathione, and sulfur-containing compounds from cruciferous veggies and alliums.
The Lymphatic System – The lymphatic system is the body’s drainage network, consisting of a vast web of vessels and nodes that collect and transport cellular waste, excess fluid, immune cells, and fat-soluble toxins from tissues throughout the body. Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system does not have a dedicated pump and therefore relies on muscular contraction, breathing, and gravity.
The Gut & The Barrier – the gut’s role in detoxification is less commonly understood but is critically important. The intestinal wall is lined with a single layer of epithelial cells that are responsible for deciding what enters the bloodstream and what does not. When this barrier is compromised, undigested food particles, bacterial fragments, and environmental toxins can pass through and trigger a systemic immune response.
The Kidneys – the kidneys filter ~200 liters of blood daily, excreting water-soluble waste products, excess hormones, and environmental compounds through urine. They depend on adequate hydration to maintain this function through the seasonal transition. Gentle herbal support, such as this month’s featured herb Nettle, is one of the most time-honored kidney tonics and one of the first plants to emerge from the ground in the Northeast each spring.

What Interferes with Spring

The body’s natural processes can be slowed or stalled by a handful of factors, such as:
  • Aggressive cleanses or extreme restriction – very low calorie protocols or harsh cleanses can overwhelm Phase II liver detoxification and deplete the glutathione and amino acids it depends on.
  • Chronic stress – elevated cortisol levels increase intestinal permeability, suppress bile production, and divert resources away from elimination pathways.
  • Inadequate fiber – bile, which carries processed toxins from the liver, is excreted into the gut and must be bound by fiber to leave the body. Without sufficient fiber, it is reabsorbed along with the hormones and compounds meant to be carried out.
  • Dehydration – the kidneys and lymphatic system both depend on adequate fluid. Most of us are mildly dehydrated, so increasing our water intake is one of the most simple ways to make an impact.
  • Ultra-processed foods and alcohol – both generate an excess of metabolic byproducts that tax both Phase I and II liver detoxification and deplete the antioxidants needed to protect against the intermediates Phase I produces.

Simple Practices to Support Spring Clearing

Effective support for the body’s spring clearing efforts can be as simple as implementing two or three from the list below:
  • Increase water intake – aim for half your body weight in ounces daily as a starting point. Warm water with lemon first thing in the morning gently stimulates liver bile production and kidney filtration
  • Add cruciferous veggies daily – broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, and arugula contain sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol, two of the most potent natural inducers of Phase II liver detoxification enzymes
  • Move your body every day – even a 20-minute walk moves the lymphatic system meaningfully. April is the month to begin building the movement habit that will carry through the summer. Start gently!
  • Eat the rainbow of fiber – diverse plant fibers feed diverse gut bacteria, which collectively produce short-chain fatty acids that can help heal the gut lining and bind bile for excretion. Variety matters as much as quantity.
  • Reduce alcohol – even moderate alcohol consumption taxes Phase I liver detoxification and depletes glutathione.
  • Add this month’s botanical – Nettle (Urtica dioica) supports all four clearing organs (liver, lymph, gut, and kidneys) and is one of the few plants that does so while simultaneously delivering extraordinary nutritional density. It is the ideal April herb, and it is emerging from the ground in New Jersey right now.
Rather than being forced into a spring cleanse, the body needs to be supported in the one it is already running. It simply does it better when we reduce what is obstructing it and add what it is asking for. Two or three of these practices, returned to consistently through April, is enough to shift the baseline meaningfully.
